Description
The Calhoun County Public Defender's Office in South Carolina is located in Orangeburg and falls under the First Judicial Circuit. This office has one Circuit Public Defender, one Deputy Public Defender and four Public Defenders on staff, representing defendants in criminal courts of Calhoun County who are financially indigent. The First Judicial Circuit also includes the Dorchester and Orangeburg counties. The Circuit Public Defender is responsible for the administration of public defender services in each of the counties within the circuit. The South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense (SCCID) oversees the administration of the indigent defense services in Calhoun County. The SCCID sets and enforces standards to ensure consistency across South Carolina and maintain accountability of those persons entrusted with the life and liberty of poor persons charged with crimes.
