The Crook County Public Defender's Office is located in Gillette, WY. With one Supervising Attorney and other legal support staff, this Public Defender's office provides legal representation to indigent defendants in Crook County. The mission of the Crook County Public Defender's office is to provide effective assistance of counsel to indigent adults and juveniles accused of a crime. The right to counsel guaranteed to every American citizen charged with a crime is embodied in the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution and applicable to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment. An integral component of the right to counsel is the right to court-appointed counsel for those unable to hire an attorney. Individuals determined to be eligible for court-appointed counsel do not have the right to choose who their attorney will be. However, they do have the right to have competent legal representation.
