DARE
Description
DARE is a community based organization that believes strongly in the power of mobilizing the community to facilitate social justice reform. Their mission is to involve low-income community members and people of color in active efforts to improve the community, disrupt the police state and support individuals with underlying conditions that are commonly criminalized. Their Behind the Wall program works to improve the rights of the justice involved individuals, and to advocate for community justice as an alternative to incarceration. Through this campaign, DARE has shared in community victories that include: voting rights for formerly incarcerated people; improved access to public housing for community members with criminal convictions; and Ban the Box legislation that prevents employers from requiring applicants to indicate whether or not they have a record. For more information about current campaigns or to volunteer with DARE, individuals should contact the organization directly using the information on this page.
