Description

The Darlington County Public Defender's Office in South Carolina falls under the Fourth Judicial Circuit. This office has one Circuit Public Defender and two Assistant Public Defenders on staff, representing defendants in criminal courts of Darlington County who are financially indigent. The Fourth Judicial Circuit also includes the Chesterfield, Dillon and Marlboro counties. All persons have the constitutional right to be represented by an attorney if they have been accused of a crime and the punishment for that crime could be a time in jail or prison. The Circuit Public Defender is responsible for the administration of public defender services in Darlington County. However, the South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense (SCCID) sets and enforces standards to ensure consistency across South Carolina and maintain accountability of those persons entrusted with the life and liberty of poor persons charged with crimes.
