District of Arizona Federal Public Defender’s Flagstaff Office
Description
The District of Arizona Federal Public Defender's Flagstaff Office is located in Flagstaff, Arizona. The mission of the Federal Public Defender's Office is to ensure that the right to the effective assistance of counsel guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution and the Criminal Justice Act (CJA) is enforced within the District of Arizona on behalf of those who are unable to afford retained counsel and other necessary defense services. The Arizona Federal Public Defender's Office (FPD) has three units - The Trial Unit, Capital Habeas Unit and The Appellate Unit. Trial Unit attorneys represent persons accused of committing federal crimes in Arizona who cannot afford to hire a lawyer. They defend the Constitution by standing beside the accused during all pre-trial, trial, and sentencing proceedings. With over twenty-five attorneys, the Capital Habeas Unit (CHU) protects the constitutional rights of indigent people sentenced to death. Attorneys in the CHU represent people on death row in Arkansas, Arizona, California, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma, Ohio, Texas, Utah, and prisoners on federal death row in Terra Haute. The CHU attorneys regularly litigate in federal district court and the courts of appeals. Lastly, attorneys in the Appellate Unit represent defendants in appeals of federal conviction and non-capital Habeas Corpus petitions for the District of Arizona.
