The District of Arizona Federal Public Defender's Yuma office is located in Yuma, Arizona. The mission of the Federal Public Defender's Office is to ensure that the right to the effective assistance of counsel guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution and the Criminal Justice Act (CJA) is enforced within the District of Arizona on behalf of those who are unable to afford retained counsel and other necessary defense services. The Federal Public Defender Unit is divided into three units - The Capital Habeas Unit (CHU) represents most of the people on death row in Arizona in federal habeas corpus proceedings. The CHU also represents people on death row in other states when appointed by a federal court. The Trial Unit has approximately 4 attorneys at the Yuma Office and helps protect the public at large from unconstitutional police practices and other abuses of power by the executive branch of government. Attorneys in the Appellate Unit represent defendants in appeals of the federal conviction and non-capital Habeas Corpus petitions for the District of Arizona.
