Envisioning Justice

Envisioning Justice

Description

Envisioning Justice facilitates an interactive exhibition which bridges the arts and humanities to comment on mass incarceration. The purpose of the exhibition is to imagine a present and a future without mass incarceration to help illustrate the impact of criminalizing communities of color and perpetuating high incarceration rates. Staff and volunteers believe in a future that is not defined by incarceration but by community restoration and collective healing. Illinois artists and humanists commission artists to prepare multimedia projects that address recidivism rates, torture and maltreatment outside the bounds of law, wrongful conviction and community reentry. By curating access to these important projects, Envisioning Justice hopes to educate the community about the realities of racial inequity and the systemic issues connected to the American criminal justice system. This will, in turn, influence stakeholders and policymakers to take a more vested interest in reform efforts that center community restoration and alternatives to incarceration.
