Essie Justice Group
Description
Essie Justice Group is a nonprofit supporting women who have an incarcerated loved one and combatting the effects of mass incarceration. They utilize a Healing to Advocacy approach to forge relationships between women and build toward collective healing. Their collection includes women of color, formerly incarcerated women and gender-nonconforming people. Essie Justice Group offers financial assistance to help offset justice costs, as well as a support network of women who understand the difficulties of having an incarcerated loved one. They also actively advocate for policy change around cash bail, a system that disproportionally affected families of color. Staff use a multi-tiered approach that includes divestment, policy changes and community action. The organization actively advocates for gender justice, including rigorous research and reporting on gender injustice in the corrections system. Women can contact the program directly for information or assistance.
