Federal Defender for the Northern District of Florida’s Capital Habeas Unit

Federal Public Defenders for the Northern District of Florida's Capital Habeas Unit is located in Tallahassee, Florida. The Capital Habeas Unit is a different division within the Tallahassee office. With around 4 Federal and Assistant Federal Defenders, the Tallahassee office provides legal representation to individuals with federal criminal cases who are financially unable to retain private counsel. The Capital Habeas Unit represents death-sentenced individuals in federal habeas proceedings. The office also provides representation for individuals convicted of state offense who are appealing their convictions through federal habeas corpus litigation. These cases are appointed to the office upon motion for counsel that has been granted by the court requesting this office's legal services. If you are charged with a federal criminal offense, you will be considered for appointed counsel at the time of your initial appearance. If you cannot afford an attorney, the federal magistrate judge will appoint an attorney for you.
