Fifteenth Judicial Circuit Conviction Review Unit

Fifteenth Judicial Circuit Conviction Review Unit

Description

The Fifteenth Judicial Circuit Conviction Review Unit is dedicated to ensuring that justice is carried out in all cases. The unit is housed in the District Attorney's office and operates exclusively as an investigatory branch. Their task is to consider the facts of all petitions filed with the court that make a claim of innocence. Those petitions that meet eligibility requirements receive a full investigation into all claims and evidence in order to determine the validity of a petitioner's claims. In order to have a case investigated by the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit Conviction Review Unit, individuals must be currently incarcerated within the jurisdiction of the court and demonstrate their innocence through the presentation of new evidence or an explanation of how new technology advancements allow for more comprehensive testing of existing evidence. Though the priority of the unit is to look into claims of innocence, they will consider eligible petitions that make other claims regarding wrongful conviction and those that establish proof of excessive sentencing as a result of conviction.
