Friends of Iowa Women Prisoners
Description
Friends of Iowa Women Prisoners is a community based organization that works to support women in Iowa correctional facilities. The group meets every third Tuesday of the month at United Methodist Church to discuss the ongoing needs of incarcerated women and how the community can best support them as they serve out their sentences. Together, the group acts as a strong advocate for the fair treatment and rehabilitation of incarcerated women. They encourage correctional facilities to increase access to health and wellness programs inside prisons, as well as rehabilitation programs and reentry programs that help women address the underlying issues that so often contribute to incarceration, including substance abuse, mental health needs and generational trauma. Friends of Iowa Women Prisoners also collaborates with local legislators to advocate for systemic reform in the justice system. For more information about specific advocacy efforts, individuals should contact the organization directly using the information on this page.
