Description
The Indiana County, PA Public Defender’s Office is responsible for furnishing competent and effective legal counsel to any person who lacks sufficient funds to obtain legal counsel in any proceeding where representation is constitutionally required. With one Public Defender and other attorneys and staff, the Office represents any person whose indigence prevents him from obtaining counsel in Juveniles criminal offenses, Adults criminal or traffic offenses, County or state parole/probation revocation proceedings, Proceedings under the Mental Health Act, Violation of Protection from Abuse orders, Representation of children in dependency hearings etc. Additionally, the Public Defender’s Office provides legal representation to indigent defendants in Indiana who cannot pay for private counsel and risk losing their liberty if convicted. The Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees the rights of criminal defendants, including the right to a public trial without unnecessary delay and the right to a lawyer. The privilege of offering representation to those in need is why the law has offered public defense services.
