Innocence Delaware
Description
Innocence Delaware is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to help incarcerated people affected by wrongful convictions. The project provides pro bono services to investigate and seek relief for legal and genuine claims of wrongful convictions. Innocence Delaware is located at the Widener University Delaware Law School and provides free legal assistance where there is a compelling innocence claim and that it can be proven. The project does not work on cases where the claim is an affirmative defense, such as consensual sex, self-defense, or accidental death. Innocence Delaware will also provide post-exoneration support to individuals who have been proven innocent and will identify and remedy the causes for wrongful convictions such as official misconduct, bad science, eyewitness misidentification, faulty forensic evidence, coerced confessions, perjury and prejudice. Additionally, the project helps to educate the public about potential criminal justice reforms related to wrongful conviction and exoneration, as well as access to justice.
