Description
The Lancaster Public Defender's Office, located in Wisconsin, serves the Crawford, Grant, Iowa and Richland counties. They provide legal representation for persons accused of crimes or defendants who meet statutory financial eligibility criteria in certain civil matters. The office has two Assistant Special Public Defenders (SPD), attorneys and other supporting staff that provide representation in the appropriate case type. The office's mission is to zealously represent clients, protect constitutional rights, and advocate for an effective and fair criminal justice system. Their commitment is to treat their clients with dignity and compassion. An individual must apply for a public defender by completing a detailed financial statement and agreeing to provide documentation concerning the applicant's financial eligibility, income, assets (including spousal income and assets), family size, and the type of case for which the applicant seeks SPD representation. Individuals determined to be eligible for court-appointed counsel do not have the right to choose who their attorney will be. However, they do have the right to have competent legal representation.
