The Luzerne County’s Public Defender’s Office is dedicated to protecting the Constitutional rights of all indigent individuals accused of violating the law. They provide quality and zealous legal advocacy to seek the best possible outcomes for our clients with an interdisciplinary team approach throughout their entire case experience. Their office employs specifically-trained and experienced attorneys, social service advocates, one Chief Public Defender and criminal investigators to meet the individualized needs of their clients. Following the Pennsylvania Public Defender Act, they provide free legal representation for qualifying applicants in cases such as Felony, Misdemeanor, Certain criminal traffic citations, State parole hearings, Mental health hearings, Juvenile delinquency, Probation and Parole violations. The right to counsel guaranteed to every American citizen accused of a crime is embodied in the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution and made applicable to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment. An integral component of the right to counsel is the right to court-appointed counsel for those unable to hire an attorney.
