Description
The 12th Circuit Public Defender’s Office provides legal representation to indigent individuals charged with a criminal offense in Florence and Marion counties. The Marion County Public Defender's Office has one Circuit Public Defender, one Chief Public Defender and one Assistant Public Defender on staff, the Marion County Public Defender's Office represents defendants in criminal court who are financially indigent. To qualify for an appointed attorney, you must first go through a screening process where you complete a financial affidavit. If you are eligible, an attorney will be appointed to represent you. The South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense (SCCID) governs the working of the Marion County Office. The SCCID is responsible for ensuring that all individuals are provided with indigent defense services in South Carolina and provide the highest quality of representation to their clients. In addition, the SCCID sets and enforces standards to ensure consistency across South Carolina and maintain accountability of those persons entrusted with the life and liberty of poor persons charged with crimes.
