Michigan Department of Attorney General,Conviction Integrity Unit

The Michigan Attorney General's Office Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) analyzes claims of innocence to see if there is fresh evidence that the convicted defendant was not the one who committed the crime. To receive services by the CIU, you must have been convicted of a felony in the state of Michigan. Second, you must present a claim of factual innocence, supported by information or evidence not previously litigated in jury or bench trial. Third, the new evidence or information must not have been raised during post-conviction appeals; the claim must be capable of being investigated and resolved and, if substantiated, would bear directly on the issue of innocence. Lastly, the direct appeal has become final. The CIU will not review claims solely alleging judicial errors. You may access the CIU application on their website. Claimants must complete the application and submit it by U.S. mail or email. Submission of your petition does not guarantee the investigation of your claim. If you want more information on who is eligible for review by the CIU, please contact them directly. Please click here to learn more about what a Conviction Integrity Unit is.
