Missouri State Public Defender’s Appellate/PCR Central District Division and Capital Litigation Central District

The Missouri State Public Defender System (MSPD) Appellate/PCR Central District Division and the Capital Litigation Central District is located in Columbia. MSPD is a statewide system primarily comprised of three legal service divisions: the Trial Division, Capital Division, and Appellate/Post-Conviction Division. The Appellate/PCR Division is responsible for appellate and post-conviction litigation, including capital cases (death penalty trial representation). The MSPD has approximately 395 staff attorneys assisted by support staff, paralegals, and investigators. This organization is responsible for providing legal representation to all indigent citizens accused of or convicted of crimes at the State Trial Court, Appellate Court, Missouri Supreme Court, and United States Supreme Court. Their mission is to provide high-quality, zealous advocacy for indigent people who are accused of a crime in the state of Missouri and to provide this uncompromised advocacy, the Defender System will supply each client with a high-quality, competent, ardent defense team at every stage of the process in which public defenders are necessary.
