The Public Defender's Office for Montgomery County was established to protect and defend the rights of people who have been accused of committing various misdemeanor or felony crimes and who are unable to afford the cost of hiring an attorney on their own. The mission of the Montgomery County Public Defender's Office is to zealously protect and defend the rights of their clients through compassionate and effective legal representation of the highest quality in pursuit of a fair and unbiased system of justice for all. The office is dedicated to the basic American ideal that the quality of justice a person receives should never depend upon how much money he or she has. They strive to provide the highest quality legal representation to their clients, and believe that defending the rights of the clients protects the rights of all members of our community. The Montgomery County Public Defender's Office's client-centered representation begins at first appearance (within 72 hours of arrest) when a person charged has the first opportunity to be seen and heard before the court.
