The Montgomery County Office of Indigent Defense is located in Conroe, Texas. The Office of Indigent Defense oversees the administrative operation of the seven district courts and five county courts at law of Montgomery County. In addition, it administers the Texas Fair Defense Act under rules adopted by these courts. The goal of the office is to provide a fully competent, effective, and ethical defense to each client whose cause has been entrusted to the office for representation. The Public Defender’s office strives to provide all mandated legal services effectively and efficiently and conduct that representation so that the county criminal justice system operates effectively, efficiently, and achieves justice for the citizens of Montgomery County. An individual must apply for a public defender by completing a detailed financial statement and agreeing to provide documentation concerning income, assets and debts for the person and the person’s spouse if any. This information is generally provided to a court employee who reviews the financial information and recommends to the judge whether or not the person is eligible for government-paid counsel.
