New Mexico Nature in Prisons Project
Description
Institute for Applied Ecology (IAE) is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to conserving native species and habitats through restoration, research, and education. IAE works to create a society where all people and wildlands are healthy and interact harmoniously, biological diversity thrives, and environmental issues are addressed with a social commitment to using scientific methods to solve problems. The New Mexico Nature in Prisons Project aims to promote an inclusive education program in New Mexico prisons that contributes to the stability and health of the state's natural landscapes. This program contains an educational component that helps those incarcerated obtain new skills and information while preparing for reentry into community life. The training provides a strong basis in horticulture, ecology, and restoration, which increases employment eligibility in the conservation field and can help in successful reintegration.
