Description

The Newberry County Public Defender's Office in South Carolina provides indigent defense services. Newberry County is part of the Eighth Judicial Circuit in South Carolina. Their office has a team of one Circuit Public Defender, one Chief Public Defender and One Part time Assistant Public Defender, responsible for representing defendants in criminal court who are financially indigent. Public Defenders do not represent persons in prison and seeking release on parole. State and federal law provide that all persons have the constitutional right to be represented by an attorney if they have been accused of a crime and the punishment for that crime could be a time in jail or prison. If that person is financially unable to hire an attorney, then the law provides that an attorney shall be appointed to represent them.
