Description
The Northampton County Public Defender's Office, located in Easton, Pennsylvania has one Chief Public Defender, one 1st Assistant Public Defender, one Senior Public Defender, seven Assistant Public Defenders and other Attorneys and supporting staff. The mission of the Public Defender's office is to provide competent and effective legal counsel to any person who lacks sufficient funds to obtain legal counsel in any proceeding where representation is constitutionally or statutorily required. The Public Defender represents eligible individuals at all stages of misdemeanor and felony criminal cases and in certain summary cases, including pretrial identification procedures, preliminary hearings, pretrial motions, trials, post-trial proceedings, sentencing proceedings, probation and parole violation hearings, bail reduction hearings and extradition hearings. The Public Defender also provides counsel to juveniles in all phases of juvenile delinquency matters. In addition, the Public Defender represents individuals facing mental health commitment. The work of the Public Defender includes representation at the magisterial district court level, representation at the trial court level, representation at the appellate court level, and representation in post-conviction collateral proceedings.
