Office of the Commonwealth Attorney, Conviction Review Unit
Description
The Office of the Commonwealth Attorney Conviction Review Unit (CRU) Is a unit whose mission is to ensure that any convictions obtained by government wrongdoing or against an innocent person are brought to light and ultimately redressed. The CRU works with local and state agencies as well as post-conviction attorneys representing inmates and the formerly incarcerated to carry out the Commonwealth’s statutory responsibilities with regard to writs of actual innocence and requests for scientific analysis of newly discovered or previously untested evidence. In general, a Conviction Integrity Unit reexamines past convictions with questions over the defendant’s guilt or innocence. In addition to making sure people are serving prison sentences for crimes they actually committed, these offices also identify areas where improvement is needed to avoid future mistakes. For more information on how to request a review by the CRU, please email them. Please click here to learn more about what a Conviction Integrity Unit is.
