Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, Conviction Integrity unit

Description

The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) reviews questionable past convictions. The CIU aims to fairly evaluate applicant cases and pursue corrections for individuals who have been denied justice. Its mission is to strive for justice by using a collection of resources across the state to ensure that the system is fair and that everyone's voices are heard. Conviction Integrity Unit reexamines past convictions with questions over the defendant's guilt or innocence. In addition to ensuring people are serving prison sentences for crimes they committed. The applicant must meet five criteria before their case can be investigated for a claim of innocence: First, the claim of actual innocence must be predicated on a factual matter, not a purely legal issue. Secondly, the claimant must present new evidence of actual innocence capable of being investigated and potentially substantiated; third, case records needed for re-investigation of the claim must exist and be available for review; fourth, the claim must not be frivolous; and lastly, the claimant must agree to cooperate fully with the unit.
