Description
The Platte County Public Defender's Office, located in Columbus, Nebraska, represents all indigent felony defendants within Platte County. With one Public Defender, two Deputy Public Defenders, one Paralegal and one Legal Assistant, the Office is responsible for representing the Platte County in criminal defense cases resulting from lawsuits filed against the indigent client in Columbus, Nebraska. The duty of the Platte county Public Defender involves representing all indigent persons charged with a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment within Platte County. Additionally, the Public Defender must represent all indigent persons against whom a petition has been filed with the Platte County Mental Health Board. The Office of the Public Defender is elected by voters every four years. Mr. Matas has held this position since 2010. The Public Defender ensures that every accused citizen, regardless of financial resources, receives zealous and effective representation as mandated by the United States and Nebraska Constitutions. Public Defenders have an ethical responsibility to work for the best possible resolution of the case for the client. All dealings between a court-appointed attorney and the client are confidential.
