The Richmond Public Defender’s Office is appointed by the Court to represent people who cannot afford to hire their own lawyer. Their chief public defender, seven public defenders, three investigators, three mitigation specialists, and three legal assistants all work together as a team to provide zealous, client-centered representation to their clients. The Public Defenders are responsible for trying cases in General District, Juvenile, and Circuit Courts for their respective locality. In addition, cases may be handled at the trial and/or appellate level. If you cannot afford to hire an attorney for your criminal case, and there is the possibility of a jail sentence, you may qualify for a public defender. Qualification is based on your income, family size, and any debts you may owe.
