Safeguarding Children of Arrested Parents

Section Title

Safeguarding Children of Arrested Parents

Safeguarding Children of Arrested Parents is a program created to address the needs of children whose parents are incarcerated. This is a program through the Somerset County Local Management Board, an organization established in 1997 as a response for the State's desire to transform human services for children and families. The Safeguarding Children of Arrested Parents program is held at the Somerset County Detention Center and Eastern Correctional Institution. Incarcerated parents will receive reentry coordination and family mediation services, while the children and their caregivers are provided with aftercare and resource connections in the community. Law enforcement officers are also provided with resources and training that will allow them mitigate trauma to children present during the arrest of their parents. The ultimate goal of this program is to achieve a more successful reentry transition for incarcerated individuals and their families, which will reduce recidivism and the effects of incarceration on families.
