Description

The Schuylkill County Public Defender's Office is located in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. The office provides free legal representation for any person charged with a criminal matter in Schuylkill County and for persons who cannot afford an attorney for lack of funds. In Schuylkill County, the County Commissioners appoint a Chief Public Defender, who is full-time. The county also employs Assistant Public Defenders and support staff to help carry out the duties of the office. All public defenders are attorneys at law admitted to practice before the Superior and Supreme Courts of Pennsylvania. The office of Public Defender provides legal counsel to indigent persons in cases like juvenile delinquency proceedings, critical pretrial identification procedures, preliminary hearings, state habeas corpus proceedings, state trials, including pretrial and post-trial motions, Pennsylvania Superior Court appeals, Pennsylvania Supreme Court appeals, post-conviction hearings, including proceedings at the trial and appellate levels, criminal extradition proceedings, probation and parole revocation hearings, Indirect Criminal Contempt hearings (PFA Violations), mental health commitment proceedings and any other situations where representation is constitutionally required.
