Williamson County, IL Public Defender’s Office

The Williamson County Public Defender's Office is located in Marion, Illinois. With one Chief Public Defender, three Public Defenders, and other supporting staff, the office is responsible for providing legal representation, consultation, and advice to clients and representing clients in criminal investigative proceedings. In addition, the Williamson County Public Defender's Office provides legal representation to any person charged with a criminal offense where incarceration is a possible sentence and to any person named as a party in a juvenile court proceeding who is financially unable to hire an attorney. The right to counsel guaranteed to every American citizen accused of a crime is embodied in the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution and made applicable to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment. An integral component of the right to counsel is the right to court-appointed counsel for those unable to hire an attorney. The Office of the Williamson Public Defender is charged with representing the County of Williamson in criminal defense cases resulting from lawsuits filed against the indigent client in Williamson County, Illinois.
