Section Title

Wyandotte County and Kansas City Community Integrity Unit

The Community Integrity Unit is a part of the Wyandotte County and Kansas City court system that investigates claims of innocence. The function of the Community Integrity Unit is to serve as an arm of the District Attorney's office focused on determining the validity of claims of injustice by committing time to a full investigation of cases wherein individuals provide credible evidence to support their claims of innocence, offer evidence that they were wrongfully convicted or otherwise make claims of injustice related to criminal proceedings. Staff in the division identify the truth of all eligible claims and decide whether or not plea bargaining impacted the final outcome of the case. They focus their attention on incarcerated individuals who have served a major portion of their sentence. If claims of innocence are backed by confirmable evidence, staff may recommend that the District Attorney reopen the case and look into whether or not evidence of innocence warrants further action.
