Wyoming Office of the State Public Defender

The Wyoming Office of the State Public Defender is located in Cheyenne, WY. With a State Public Defender, a Deputy State Public Defender, a Fiscal Officer and other legal supporting staff, the sole purpose of the State Public Defender's Office is to provide effective assistance of counsel to indigent adults and juveniles accused of a crime in the Circuit, District, and Juvenile Courts, as mandated by the federal and state constitutions. The agency represents juveniles accused of delinquency in juvenile court and individuals on appeal in the Wyoming Supreme Court. Additional functions include representing individuals who are to be extradited to other states and individuals seeking post-conviction relief. An individual must apply for a public defender by completing a detailed financial statement and agreeing to provide documentation concerning income, assets, and debts for the person and the person’s spouse if any. This information generally is provided to a court employee who reviews the financial information and makes a recommendation to the judge on whether or not the person is eligible for government-paid counsel. The Wyoming State Public Defender is mandated by state law and the Constitutions of the United States and the State of Wyoming to provide competent, effective, and ethical legal representation to people unable to afford private counsel in certain kinds of cases where life or liberty issues are at stake. If you please visit their website for details about who qualifies for representation by the Public Defender's Office and how and when you can apply.
