The Virginia Beach Public Defender's Office is a satellite office for the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC). The VIDC is a governing body for this office and is dedicated to protecting and defending the rights and dignity of its clients through zealous, compassionate, high-quality legal advocacy. The Virginia Beach Office provides legal representation to indigent defendants who cannot pay for private counsel and risk losing their liberty if convicted. The Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees the rights of criminal defendants, including the right to a public trial without unnecessary delay and the right to a lawyer. The privilege of offering representation to those in need is why the law has offered public defense services. The Virginia Beach Public Defender's Office is mandated by state law and the Constitutions of the United States and the State of Virginia to provide competent, effective, and ethical legal representation to people unable to afford private counsel in some instances where life or liberty are at stake.
