The District of Arizona Federal Public Defender's (FPD) Phoenix Office is located in Phoenix, Arizona. With around 16 trial attorneys, the office serves those who are unable to afford retained counsel in the District of Arizona. The mission of the Federal Public Defender's Office is to ensure that the right to the effective assistance of counsel guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution and the Criminal Justice Act (CJA) is enforced within the District of Arizona on behalf of those who are unable to afford retained counsel and other necessary defense services. The FPD is divided into three units - The Trial Unit, Capital Habeas Unit and The Appellate Unit. The Phoenix office has 16 trial attorneys. In this capacity, Trial Unit attorneys help protect the public at large from unconstitutional police practices and other abuses of power by the executive branch of government. The Capital Habeas Unit (CHU) protects the constitutional rights of indigent people sentenced to death. There are 7 appellate attorneys in the appellate unit for the Phoenix office, they represent defendants in appeals of federal conviction and non-capital Habeas Corpus petitions for the District of Arizona.
