Description

The District of Arizona Federal Public Defender's Tucson Office is located in Tucson, Arizona. The office serves those who are unable to afford retained counsel in the District of Arizona. The Public Defender's Office is divided into three units - The Trial Unit, Capital Habeas Unit and The Appellate Unit. With around 21 trial attorneys, the trial Unit accepts an appointment in a broad range of cases, including crimes alleged to have been committed on Arizona’s Native American reservations, drug offenses, immigration crimes, crimes involving the U.S. mails, offenses on military bases, importation or exportation law violations, and any other offense committed on federal lands. The attorneys assist domestic and foreign nationals in navigating a complex system of criminal justice. All of the trial attorneys at the Tucson office are fluent Spanish speakers. These abilities enable them to represent people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The Capital Habeas Unit (CHU) protects the constitutional rights of indigent people sentenced to death. Attorneys in the CHU have national practice experience and represent people on death row in Arkansas, Arizona, California, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma, Ohio, Texas, Utah, and prisoners on federal death row in Terra Haute. The CHU attorneys regularly litigate in federal district court and the courts of appeals. Attorneys in the Appellate Unit represent defendants in appeals of the federal conviction and non-capital Habeas Corpus petitions for the District of Arizona.
