Description
The Lee County Public Defender's Office is located in Dixon, Illinois. With one Public Defender, one Assistant Public Defender and other supporting staff, the office is responsible for caseloads ranging from all felonies to misdemeanors and juvenile abuse and neglect cases. The goal of the Public Defender is to provide a fully competent, effective, and ethical defense to each client whose cause has been entrusted to the Office for representation. Additionally, the Public Defender's Office strives to provide all mandated legal services effectively and efficiently and conduct that representation so that the county criminal justice system operates effectively, efficiently, and achieves justice for the citizens of Lee County. The right to counsel guaranteed to every American citizen accused of a crime is embodied in the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution and made applicable to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment. An integral component of the right to counsel is the right to court-appointed counsel for those unable to hire an attorney.
