Description
The Iowa Office of the State Public Defender (OSPD) has a branch office in Nevada, Iowa, responsible for coordinating criminal defense services for indigent people in Story County. With a panel of attorneys and public defenders, the OSPD's Nevada office ensures that all disadvantaged persons in Iowa are provided high-quality legal representation in criminal, juvenile, and other eligible proceedings in the most efficient and fiscally responsible manner. The OSPD also contracts with more than one thousand private attorneys and several nonprofit organizations throughout Iowa to provide court-appointed representation in cases that public defender offices cannot accept. The Public Defender in Nevada County handles felonies A to D, aggravated misdemeanors, serious and simple misdemeanors, appeals to the district court, contempt/show cause proceedings, civil commitments of sexually violent predators, probation violations, parole violations, extradition and post-conviction relief.
