Description
The Desoto County Public Defenders are assigned by the Court where the criminal case is pending. With two Public Defenders and six Felony Defenders, the Desoto County Public Defenders assist with misdemeanor and felonies cases. The Desoto County office represents clients who cannot pay for private counsel and risk losing their liberty if convicted. The Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees the rights of criminal defendants, including the right to a public trial without unnecessary delay, the right to a lawyer, the right to an impartial jury, the right to know who your accusers are, and the nature of the charges and evidence against you. The roles and responsibilities of the Desoto public defender's office are to provide legal representation, consultation, and advice to clients, represent clients through criminal investigative proceedings, create a defense plan, conduct legal investigative research, and interview the necessary clients and witnesses, work closely with clients, discuss relevant information and strategies.
