Description
The Orleans County Public Defender’s Office is located in Albion, New York. With one Public Defender and six Assistant Public Defenders, this office represents indigent residents accused of criminal activity committed within the County of Orleans. They have represented nearly thousands of indigent defendants in Orleans County Court, 13 local Justice Courts, and the New York State Parole System. Clients also include inmates incarcerated at the County’s two State Correctional facilities who file Habeas Corpus petitions in Orleans County Supreme Court. The Orleans County Public Defender’s Office also fields hundreds of calls from the general public, friends, family of current clients, and local magistrates regarding the defense of the indigent client in Orleans County. The right to counsel guaranteed to every American citizen accused of a crime is embodied in the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution and applicable to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment. An integral component of the right to counsel is the right to court-appointed counsel for those unable to hire an attorney.
