The Orange County Public Defender's Office falls under Defender District 15B, located in Hillsborough, NC. This office has one Public Defender, seven Assistant Public Defenders, Investigators and Legal Assistants that provide legal representation to indigent clients with criminal allegations ranging from juvenile delinquency to capital murder. They are dedicated to the belief that every person, regardless of the accusation against them, deserves a thorough zealous defense and to have their rights protected. The mission of the Orange County Public Defender's Office is to protect and defend the rights of its clients through effective, vigorous, and compassionate legal advocacy. The Office strives to provide the highest level of legal advocacy for each client. The Public Defender's office is appointed to cases by the presiding judge, usually at the defendant's first appearance. Cases eligible for representation by a public defender must carry the possibility of an active sentence or a fine of more than $500. Cases not eligible for appointment to the Public Defender's Office include traffic infractions, parking tickets, civil matters, and expungements.
