Description
The Elk County Public Defender’s Office is located in Ridgway, Pennsylvania. The office provides competent and effective legal counsel to individuals who lack sufficient funds to obtain legal counsel where representation is legally required. Additionally, with one Public Defender and various other supporting staff, the office represents the county of Elk in criminal defense cases resulting from lawsuits filed against the indigent client. Their mission is to vigorously defend citizens to preserve the rights guaranteed to all persons by the United States and Pennsylvania Constitutions. The Public Defender ensures that every accused citizen, regardless of financial resources, receives zealous and effective representation as mandated by the United States and Pennsylvania Constitutions. The right to counsel guaranteed to every American citizen accused of a crime is embodied in the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution and made applicable to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment. An integral component of the right to counsel is the right to court-appointed counsel for those unable to hire an attorney.
