Description

The Sixth Judicial Circuit Public Defender's Office represents indigent criminal defendants in Chester, Fairfield and Lancaster counties. The Lancaster County Public Defender's Office has one Circuit Public Defender, one Deputy Public Defender for Juvenile Cases and three Assistant Public Defenders on staff. The Public Defenders in Lancaster County represent defendants in criminal court who are financially indigent. They also represent juveniles who have been charged with a crime in juvenile court and cannot afford to hire an attorney. To qualify for an appointed attorney, you must first go through a screening process where you complete a financial affidavit. If you are eligible, an attorney will be appointed to represent you. The South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense ensures that all individuals are provided with indigent defense services in South Carolina and provide the highest quality of representation to their clients.
