First Judicial District, TN Public Defender’s Office

The First Judicial District Public Defender's Office is located in Jonesborough, TN. With one District Public Defender and other supporting legal staff, the First Judicial Public Defender's Office represents indigent clients in Washington, Unicoi, Carter, and Johnson counties. The goal of the Public Defender is to provide a fully competent, effective, and ethical defense to each client whose cause has been entrusted to the office for representation. The Public Defender’s Office strives to provide all mandated legal services effectively and efficiently and conduct that representation so that, insofar as possible, the county criminal justice system operates effectively, efficiently, and achieves justice for the citizens of these counties. The roles and responsibilities of the Public Defender's Office are to provide legal representation, consultation, and advice to clients, represent clients through criminal investigative proceedings, create a defense plan, conduct investigative legal research, interview the necessary clients and witnesses, work closely with clients, discuss relevant information and strategies.
