The Hays County Indigent Defense Office is located in San Marcos, Texas. Under Texas Law, persons charged with a misdemeanor punishable by jail time and any felony may be eligible for a court-appointed attorney. With one Public Defender and various other supporting staff, the office represents the county of Hays in criminal and juvenile defense cases resulting from lawsuits filed against the indigent client. In addition, according to the Hays County Indigent Defense Plan, a person is usually eligible for a court-appointed attorney if their family income does not exceed 125% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
