Description
The Petersburg Public Defender's Office is a branch office for the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC). The VIDC is a governing body for this office and is dedicated to protecting and defending the rights and dignity of its clients through zealous, compassionate, high-quality legal advocacy. The Petersburg office provides legal representation to indigent defendants who cannot pay for private counsel and risk losing their liberty if convicted. The Public Defender handles all types of cases from misdemeanors to felony rape and murder and all trial and appellate cases from State courts, General District, Juvenile and Circuit Courts. The Petersburg Public Defender's Office is mandated by state law and the Constitutions of the United States and the State of Virginia to provide competent, effective, and ethical legal representation to people unable to afford private counsel in some instances where life or liberty are at stake.
