Washington State Office of Public Defense
The Washington State Office of Public Defense (OPD) is an independent agency of the judicial branch, located in Wenatchee, WA. The mission of OPD is to uphold the rights of all people who are facing the loss of liberty or family by providing statewide leadership, administration and support to the multidisciplinary public defense profession. The OPD cannot provide direct representation to clients but administers state-funded programs by managing and distributing funds, contracting with appellate attorneys representing indigent appellants, contracting with public defender agencies representing parents in dependency and termination cases in select counties, contracting with attorneys who represent indigent respondents in civil commitment actions and contracting with attorneys who provide on-demand telephonic legal consultation to youth in contact with law enforcement and more. In addition, the OPD is dedicated to excellence in public law and indigent defense.
