The Skagit County Public Defender's Office in Mount Vernon, Washington, provides defense services to indigents charged with criminal offenses, juveniles accused of criminal offenses, at-risk juveniles, indigent parents in child dependency cases and respondents in mental health proceedings. In addition, the Skagit County Public Defender handles mental health and other civil commitment proceedings. The Public Defender does not handle civil matters such as divorce proceedings, child custody matters relating to divorce proceedings or landlord-tenant disputes. The goal of the Public Defender is to provide a fully competent, effective, and ethical defense to each client whose cause has been entrusted to the office for representation.
