Description
The Jefferson County Public Defender's Office provides a fully competent, effective, and ethical defense to each client whose cause has been entrusted to the office for representation in Wisconsin. In addition, the office has three Assistant Special Public Defenders (SPD), attorneys, and other supporting staff that provide legal representation to indigent defendants in criminal, felony and misdemeanor offenses who cannot pay for private counsel and risk losing their liberty if convicted. The office's mission is to zealously represent clients, protect constitutional rights, and advocate for an effective and fair criminal justice system. An individual must apply for a public defender by completing a detailed financial statement and agreeing to provide documentation concerning the applicant's financial eligibility, income, assets (including spousal income and assets), family size, and the type of case for which the applicant seeks SPD representation.
