Pūʻā Foundation

Pūʻā Foundation

Description

The Pu`a Foundation is a nonprofit organization developed to reconcile the complicity of the United Church of Christ in the overthrow of the Hawaiian government. The organization has a focus on social justice which centers community leadership, capacity building and concrete training. Their motto, "Trauma to Transformation, Incarceration to Independence," reflects their mission to serve the Hawaiian community following the church's part in the loss of Hawaiian independence. They facilitate several programs which work to repair the community, such as kids days at women's prisons. During these dedicated trips, Pūʻā Foundation assists children with incarcerated mothers to help ensure that they maintain strong, healthy relationships with one another during incarceration. The organization also has support programs for incarcerated women that begin with pre-release and continue through reentry services offered to women who are returning to the community. The goal of these programs is to set women up for success and provide them with the best opportunity for permanent reintegration into the community.
