Saint Louis County Conviction and Incident Review Unit
Description
The Conviction and Incident Review Unit is a subdivision of the Saint Louis County District Attorney's office that investigates claims of injustice. The mission of the unit is to ensure that justice is exacted in all cases, and to investigate credible claims to the contrary. While not all appeals are investigated by the Conviction and Incident Review Unit, staff do look into claims of innocence that include credible proof to support an individual's claims. Additionally, all evidence must be new to the case, meaning that the unit will not consider claims based on a reinterpretation of evidence already presented as part of the conviction. The unit also does not consider attempts to exonerate deceased individuals. All claims investigated by the Conviction and Incident Review Unit must involve currently incarcerated individuals. Though the focus is on claims of innocence, the office will occasionally consider other claims of injustice when supported by strong evidence that may result in a significantly different outcome for the case in question.
